about

Black Atmosphere was formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, CA by Xstoph Gladis, a former guitarist for Christian Death, The Dream, Legion, and Black Cow. After relocating to Seattle in 1992, Black Atmosphere was a legendary live act combining theatrics with a psychedelic / glam-gothic appearance and the occasional acrobat and fire eater. Black Atmosphere was featured on several compilations from Cleopatra Records and shared the stage with many luminaries from there gothic and industrial scene.

I joined Black Atmosphere in 1993 to replace their recently departed keyboardist. I quickly formed a strong songwriting bond with Xtoph that lasted for a decade and spilled into several early Blue Hour recordings and shows and some soundtrack work. Redeem, which was recorded in 1993-1995, is Black Atmosphere’s first proper album and in my opinion features the band’s finest line-up of Xtoph on guitar/vocals, Tom Moller on drums, Kenyatta Iniko on bass, and myself on keyboards and other noise making things.

We recorded most of Redeem in the orchestral room of a local college located deep in the woods outside of Seattle, taking advantage of the space and instruments to create our own sound world. The sessions took place over the space of several nights—we couldn’t record while the college was in use. There are so many magical memories attached to this album. Perhaps the most memorable (that I can repeat here), was recording the piano for Melt as the first hints of sun broke the horizon. Eyes closing from lack of sleep (and several beers), I felt myself melt into the chords as Xtoph’s voice swayed lazily through the hypnotic melodies.

Today marks the fourth week of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon waking and pulling myself, once again, to the computer, I determined that I didn’t want our albums to disappear to time and dust. So, although I’m no mastering engineer, I did my best to pull our music from the dustbin of a CD/tape only history. This is one piece of our story with more to come.
